Oh the patterns I could sew!

I talked to the director of our play and I asked if I could make my own dress for the play and she said yes!! WAHOOO! I am extremely excited. I haven't shown her the patterns yet but I will do that soon. It's gonna be hard for me to pick ONE to make. I want to make them ALL. :) What do you think? Which one would you pick? :) I was thinking, being that they are all sleeveless , that I could just wear a cardigan sweater over them. I also had different ideas for what kind of material I could use and altering the patterns a bit. So, please share your thoughts on the topic. I would GREATLY appreciate it.

The BLUE ONE!!!!!! It is super cute in my mind... I would wear it now, and with a little sweater it would be perfect!

I wish I had just such an excuse to sew and wear one of these delicious pieces! I am personally crazy about the second from the top, especially in that blue with red. Yum.

I like the ones that have the skirt going out--they're all so cute!:D

I like B4513 the best I think...though 4443 might be a bit more versatile for future wearing. You don't wear sleeveless things? Or that's the wrong look for this play, I suppose...

Those are all very pretty patterns! However, I think all of them are more from the 50's. If you want to keep period correct to the time "It's A Wonderful Life" was filmed, you will want to keep more to the actual 40's style. (Of course, you may not be as picky as me, but it would look more correct anyway... ;-) )

Here is a link to a website that sells actual vintage patterns:

And I must advertise for the forum I'm on... ;-) I've gotten so much help on there when it comes to sewing historical clothing:

Best wishes in your sewing! :-D

Thank you all for your opinions!!

Natalie-
I don't like wearing sleeveless things, plus I don't think it would go very well in the play. :)

Melanie-
I'm not sure if our director is going to be that picky or not. I'll have to ask her again. I personally would love it if I could make these.

I'm sure you could get away with one of these dresses then... :-D It's a timeless story anyway! :-)
Personally, I do love the styles of the dresses you posted and I can't wait to see what you make!!! :-D You'll look darling in whatever you make, Mary Hatch! :-D

I have 6582 and it is one of my favorites out of the choices. Also, congratulations on getting the part.

They are all lovely! I can see how it would be hard to choose. I've made B4790 it's very easy to make but not the easiest or most comfortable dress to wear. The cardigan sweater idea is good. I should think that you could add sleeves from a different pattern fairly easily. Congratulations on your part and have fun with your sewing!!!!!

You should definitely go for the blue one on Retro 52. It is my favorite.

I like the style of the white with green on the retro 57 pattern.

I came across a 1940's "swing" dress pattern with online instructions that is from the era of the play. Here is the link http://www.sensibility.com/pattern/swinghelp.htm
